Marble sculpture is great, but it has two major pitfalls — reproducibility and weight. A solid, head-sized block of marble is heavy, and it's impossible to chisel two exact copies. The technique of lost-wax casting solved those problems, allowing sculptors to create exact, hollow (and, therefore, lighter) metal copies of existing sculptures.
